Origin Of Ikan Power, Inc.

The origin of the name Ikan Power came from Chief Ignatius E. Kanu in 1942 to assist the community to empower themselves with self help projects. The name Ikan Power was established in 1942 in Nigeria; the birth place of Chief I. E. Kanu. Ikan Power was registered in 1958 and was incorporated as a Limited liability in 1973. The civil war in that country prompted Chief I.E. Kanu to create an orphanage and housing projects as well as other community projects to assist families in coping with the difficult times of the war. In the process , Ikan Power's Child Rights Organization was born. The Child Rights organization helped women who had unwanted pregnancy's to successfully give birth in the Ikan Power medical complex. The mothers and children were well taken care of and later sent to better homes for upbringing.

At the death of founder Chief I.E. Kanu aka Ikan Power in 1999, the heir Mr. Anthony C. Kanu, son of the late Chief I.E. Kanu was working for the Michigan Department of Corrections. While there he witnessed the recidivism rate of prisoners in the correctional facilities back into the society. After several interviews with the returned prisoners, he realized that there has to be changes on how we address the individuals when they return to society in the consideration of the costs and effects of these crimes to the communities. With years of experience in dealing and interacting with these individuals, he decided it is about time to create good community based programs that will assist these ex-felons to re-integrate back into society.

In may 2006, Anthony was given permission by the Ikan Power family to use the name Ikan Power to start the Non-Profit Organization, Hence Ikan Power, Inc was formally re-established and Incorporated in Michigan , United States of America in 2006 as a non-profit organization.

The purpose of Ikan Power, Inc. is to provide transitional housing and support services for parolees, ex-offenders, homeless and temporary disaster victims to be re-unified with their families and re-integrated into society.

The mission of the organization is to address the full spectrum of re-socialization of re-entry individual who may be productive citizens in the society. The services will be rendered regardless of creed, color, religion, sex or national origin.
